"Has to use a moped engine case originally designed for a moped." So peugeot aftermarket cases would work and custom machined OG crank cases, what else falls in this category? Would a new set of cases(machined from scratch) that used moped made crankshaft, cylinder, automatic clutch, etc would be ok? I guess more clarification on this would be helpful.

They were designed to replace stock moped cases so it would be fine. If you replace your Garelli engine with a KTM 50SX, while it is 50cc 2-stroke, auto clutch 1 speed, it's not, nor was not designed to replace, a moped engine. It's stuff like this that I like to have asked, and a reason the Polini cup rules are wicked vague.

Hmm, well I have plenty of idea's and one of them is a variated puch bolt in replacement. The cases would be custom machined essentially. I think it would be pushing the rules so to speak, but having a mill and lathe make such projects possible. I like the idea of encouragement of a diy build. I also agree bolting a ktm 50 or some 80/125 engine into some random frame seems boring and lame. I like the idea of everyone playing on a level field since that makes for more exciting experience for folks. But I'm trying to approach the crazy build idea from a different direction by giving out free help and advice to folks locally and doing work cheap/free for people in other cities/locations. I'm just total nerd/gearhead.... I guess.

Hello, I am new to mopeds or I guess I have a noped. I ride a TOMOS LX w/mods. Although I don't really know squat about it. I have been riding it since summer 2009. Other then the rally I attend here in P-town the week after i got it I don't know anyone else that rides a mo or noped. I ride it every dry day we get and more and more wet days too. So what's up with racing? Is this happening or what? Are people racing moped and nopeds here locally on real tracks? If yes, how can I get involved? I miss the adrenaline from riding in the pack during the rally this past summer.
Thanks Jeremie

Naz,
Well, your right, one off custom engine cases would be stretching the rules I guess but it's a hard line to define. I guess you could say that you have to buy cases from a manufacturer and cannot spring for custom cases but really there is no threat of lots of people doing this. At first at least. So really if one person made a custom case that was the envy of everyone not everyone would be able to do the same thing so there could be a cry of foul for money, or a cry of foul because you built it around modern scooter tech with puch engine mounts on it. Since you're the only person I can think of that would even attempt it and we would like to see people on the track I don't see any reason against it. Now it if is quite obvious that a couple people with full custom engines go out there and start winning each race by a lot then the rules would have to be addressed on the matter but at first, I say whatever.
Jeremie, The dates and details are listed in the Oregon Scooter forum here on this site. There will be a full on moped class and your bike would be allowed to ride in it with modifications for safety of course. Contact Patrick at P-Town or browse around these boards for the other rules and regulations for what would be expected of you to have and how much it will cost. We would love to see you out there. At least for a practice day, or as a spectator.

Jeremie - Welcome! A Tomos LX would do fine on the local tracks. It would in fact be a great starting platform for someone interested in doing this kind of riding that perhaps doesn't have the ever expanding knowledge base required of the vintage tuning peeps. Suffice to say - it's a pretty good start out of the box as far as readily available mopeds go. Please do ask questions and by all means - come check it out. ;D Cheers. - P
