Hey guys, check out what I just bought. It's a 2001 Derbi Variant Revolution. The only thing that is wrong with it is the broken rear fender. I paid $300!! It has regi and everything. It goes pretty good for a 50cc twist and go. So the big question is...Does anyone know what the hell this thing is?? Very little info on the webernet. I saw some good vids on youtube of hopped up ones doing wheelies and whatnot. JJ I saw you are working on putting a Variant engine in a moped frame. Do you know where I can get the fun stuff for this thing to make it go to 11? I think I will need the standard 70cc kit, variator, big carb, pipe, reed, etc.

Well, what you got there is a Revolution. Excellent bike but never offered with pedals. Therefor making it not a moped class bike on said technicality. A continuation on the older Variant frames and engine designs. Rad motor, rad frame, case inducted fast stock, can be made to be as fast as you want. Basically it's a scooter motor with a really short case and a chain drive rear wheel. You can sell that motor itself for more than $300 in the states.

Nice score Angus! this is the exact same motor I am mounting on my frame. As a matter of fact the one you saw on you tube is the exact actual bike my motor came from. Unfortunately the air cooled metrakit 70 top end for this bike is discontinued... Fortunately the malossi mhr race cylinders for minarelli scooters share the same bore and stroke as that, and almost the exact bolt pattern. 25HP? Do a search on moped army for the build specs. And Jesse, you moped kids really need to let go of the pedal technicality. Pedals or no pedals, they are still gay little toys. If you want to get technical, they took the moped engine and put it in a scooter... just saying.

JJ you're hilarious! I laughed about the "gay little toy" comment for hours. Mostly because you're right. But we love our gay little toys don't we? Anyway, thank's for the info guys. Still having issues finding info on this thing. That's ok, I'll just have to get creative for my mods. I do have a 24/24 down draft carb sitting around. Perhaps a copper reed manifold like on the Jawa? The last owner said he had to replace the cylinder so I was pleasantly surprized to find a 49cc metrakit cylinder kit installed... Nice port configuration including exhaust boost ports. Could use some case matching though. Does this look like the right spark plug to you? Me thinks not.

Angus, could you do me favor and take a look at the belt on your bike, tell me what brand and markings are on it? I am trying to find replacements and mine has the wrong one on it completely so I have nothing for camparison. It is proving to be quite the challenge. also on a side note, we found out that a malossi delta clutch fits right in this thing. Also the variator from a the atlantis seems to be that same, giving the option of running some of the more tunable varios out there. I tried to fit up the selettra inner rotor gnition form my other derbi and the mounting for the stator is all wrong, it is a two hole mounting. gonna have to figure something out there.

Not sure what the belt size is but i ordered a new one from 1977 and it fits perfectly. When searching for the belt on their website it is the "Derbi Revolution" belt not the "Derbi Variant Race" belt. I tried the race belt first because it sounded faster but it was too dam big. Obviosly for older Variants.
I got the Malossi clutch springs from Treatland and put the red ones on the stock clutch. It's really hard to get them on, I had to open up the mounting hole on one side of each. Awesome action on it. The clutch grabs just as the power band kicks in. Be sure to sand the clutch drum a bit and put some cross hatching on the pads to get that extra grab.
Boo hoo, all that work and I'm going to sell mine. Trying to get some decent dough for it on CL. I'm not going to race it and i have too many street bikes that need insurance. Know anyone that wants to buy it?
