Hi!
I was recently introduced to the prospect of scooter racing in BC, it looks like a lot of fun.
I have one question: What kind of scoot should one look for to start with if they wanted something cheap with good availability of parts needed to start racing?
The keyword is cheap. Ie, if I can find a beat up one of these for $500, that would be great.
Cheers Dustin

depends on what kinda scooter you like! vintage vespas can sometimes be had for $500 but you will have to put some more time and money into them to get them track worthy. You can often find newer auto bikes for pretty cheap. good ones would be a yamaha zuma, aprilia sr50, derbi, or anything with a minarelli based engine. you could also try to find a honda elite, or a moped. We have a vespa p200 on the floor at ptown you could buy, it is track prepped and proven, $1500. probably needs some TLC after Our buddy Drats tough love sessions last year, but its got a $500 pipe on it, $400 worth of suspension, etc. We have a smallframe vespa frame sans motor in the back room at the shop you can have fro cheap, if you can source a motor for it. We can find one and build it up for you, doing it right will cost some money though..

It depends on what you are into or what you want to do. The Scooter Hive (Jackson & Railway) has a small frame Vespa project for $700 obo. If you like gears, clutches, working on stuff and potentially breaking the 30hp mark then it is a good starting point. I've also seen dio's for $500 from time to time on Craig's list.

'Any cheap two stroke'... I'm gonna step in & say no. Pay attention to the makes & manufacturers that people are using & recommending. There are definitely better starting points than others. Ask more questions if you have to. And WELCOME to our forum! ;D ;D ;D

I just picked up a "parts" yamaha jog (meaning no paperwork) for $100. I'm less than $400 total now and this thing is screamin' fast. Mind you i made my own pipe and used some parts lyin' around my shop. But pretty much any Dio, Jog or BWS you can find that has an engine and two wheels plus $400-$500 in performance parts (70cc kit, pipe, 20-24mm carb, good clutch, new rollers, etc.) and you will have a smokin' fast scoot.
