It looks like the stud spacing on my 'rookie of the year trophy' Ludwig & Scherer GmbH exhaust is significantly wider than the Malossi 136. Paddy and Dayne are both running that pipe with big boy kits. Wondering if I need to shell out some big $$$ for a new kit Thoughts?

I say do it! Actually the new Polini Falc copy is not that bad of a price. .. If it was out when I was building mine I would have gone that route.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. The Malossi kit still looks really good. The reason that I was cutting out at the top end was cause the head pipe was loose! That is the exact kit I was looking at but will need a new crank and other bits

Ugh, don't want the carb back in there. I suppose that I could just ovalize the holes on the head pipe and hog out the exhaust port on the malossi. Depends on how serious JJ is about wanting to buy my Malossi setup What crank would I need for the polini kit? Not the stoopid expensive one that polini sells but a long stroke Mazzy and base plate and/or head gasket setup to get the port timings right. Then the case work that needs to be done to accomodate a full circle crank can be done with careful dremelling or is a machine shop required?

I've seen it done with a dremel or drill and a round sanding drum. It's just for clearance so accuracy is not that important. I used devcon for where it broke through. I would definitely say it was doable on your own.
Yeah go for one of the mazz 54 stroke cranks. A bit of adjustment to the timings and you should be cooking. I can make up spacers or packers and send them to you as required.
Cheers,
Dayn

Yep. For the Polini/Falc this guy will work: www.sip-scootershop.com/en/products/full+circle+crankshaft+mazzu_45069000Gotta deck the case to be able to use the ports correctly & mill the flyside out to 88.5mm. You will have a little cleanup to do to get clean rotation with the crank. Probably need to have a variety of head/base gaskets to get the ports exactly where you want them & then a little more trimming to get them exactly right. The power output becomes... hilarious.

Okay, that is the crank that I had figured on as well. I was getting confused but then realized the other options were ETS cranks. Do those use a larger clutch side bearing or something? Got the case decked by RB last year so I'm good there. Guessing that I need a whole new clutch to go with it. Currently stock with the exception of DRT top plate and daynspeed 8 spring setup w 4 polini alum plates. Go with the DRT baseplate and basket to complete the setup? Throw in the SIP clutch cover? Guessing that the 'complete' Newfren race clutch probably not so great considering how cheap it is. I am running an RMS striaight cut primary in it currently but am guessing I will need to get that welded up. I don't know, maybe I just need to build an entirely new engine

You can use your same bearing arrangement with that crank.
Clutch... You might be able to run that & have it hold for a weekend at a time, but you'd be very near the threshold for needing something more substantial. I do like the XL2 cover/Dayn conversion cover for hand comfort/using brutally stiff springs. You might also be able to put 5 carbon plates in there... Using the correct oil with that is going to be paramount, though. DRT basket... I have one if you want. You're welcome to take a look. No need to weld the primary - just stiffer springs.

"You might be able to run that & have it hold for a weekend at a time" I take it yr talking about the Newfren clutch assembly. The last thing I want is to have to rebuild my clutch every weekend Patrick . If the DRT setup is the right match then it will be worth it. Have to get some Dayn input for that setup. I see two different lengths of Clutch arms: XL and XL2. Not sure what is proper for my 50 special engine. I imagine there are other bits to get with that SIP clutch cover as well

I'd say that the 14 spring version of my clutch widget combined with the Polini plates should last more than a weekend even on that motor. I was going to run that last year but chickened out as I was in the points race. Patrick has a 14 spring version but if he doesn't want to part with it I can send you one.
Those carbon plates are trouble in my books...
You are going to want to go with an XL cover of some description though. My conversion works but my latest attempt to convert a long arm cover failed miserably. Back to the drawing board on that one... If you are stuck for something I can whip up another of my successful short arm conversions for you. I'm planning on doing a few anyway.
Cheers,
Dayn

Well considering that the first race is two weeks away and I need tax return money I will not be building this just yet! Thinking that I will get a used engine or cases and a tranny and start from that. I will leave my current motor as-is. No sense in taking half of the parts off and having them just lay around. I am cutting down my bike today and will be reworking a new headset configuration. Still not exactly sure how but I plan on hitting a MC salvage yard lard later today
